Senior Estimator
Position Overview
The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the preparation of accurate, competitive, and strategic cost estimates for complex projects. This role provides high-level commercial insight, mentors junior estimators, and works closely with project stakeholders to optimise project outcomes and mitigate risk from tender through to project award.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
Lead and manage the estimating function for major and complex tenders
Provide guidance, review, and mentorship to junior and intermediate estimators
Establish estimating standards, processes, and best practices across the team
Review and approve final estimates prior to submission
Estimating & Cost Planning
Prepare detailed cost estimates, budgets, and tender submissions for large-scale or high-risk projects
Interpret drawings, specifications, and project requirements to develop accurate pricing models
Conduct quantity take-offs and cost analyses with a high level of detail and accuracy
Develop and maintain cost databases and benchmarking tools
Commercial Strategy
Identify risks and opportunities within tender documents and pricing strategies
Advise management on bid strategy, pricing margins, and competitiveness
Participate in tender adjudications and contribute to decision-making processes
Analyse historical data and market trends to improve estimating accuracy
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers to obtain and evaluate pricing
Lead negotiations with subcontractors and suppliers
Present estimates and supporting rationale to senior leadership and clients where required
Project Handover
Ensure seamless transition from estimating to project delivery teams
Provide detailed handover documentation including scope clarifications, inclusions, exclusions, and risks
Support project teams during early phases to maintain alignment with tender assumptions
Key Requirements
Experience
Extensive experience (typically 7–10+ years) in estimating within the residential industry.
Proven track record of delivering successful bids on large or complex projects
Experience in leading or mentoring estimating teams
Skills
Advanced knowledge of estimating software and cost management tools
Strong commercial acumen and negotiation skills
Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities
High attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
Qualifications
Relevant degree or qualification in Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or similar
Professional memberships (e.g., AIQS, RICS) desirable
